Vinyl, Fiberglass, or Concrete? Choosing the Right Pool for Your Backyard!

Choosing the Right Pool for Your Backyard!

When it comes to designing your perfect backyard, few features add as much value and enjoyment as a custom in-ground pool. At Partridge Fine Landscapes, we offer three pool types — Vinyl, Fiberglass, and Concrete — each with its own unique benefits. Choosing the right pool depends on your lifestyle, budget, maintenance expectations, and how quickly you’d like to be swimming. Here’s a closer look at what each option offers.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Vinyl liner pools are our most popular option, with almost 95% of our installs being vinyl pools. They’re a great choice for homeowners looking to get the most value out of their investment, as they are cost effective, customizable, and fit in with any backyard design.

What makes vinyl pools so appealing is their incredible flexibility in both size and design. From traditional rectangles to freeform curves and kidney shapes, vinyl pools are available in a wide variety of layouts. They’re also soft to the touch, making them more comfortable than rougher-surfaced concrete pools. Vinyl liners come in numerous colors and patterns, allowing you to easily refresh your pool’s look over the years. Add-ons like tanning ledges, custom coping, and decorative decking are also available, offering further design freedom.

Vinyl pools are compatible with saltwater systems, ozone systems, and chlorine systems. However, we do saltwater as our standard as we recommend that as the current best option!

Addressing common inquiries regarding vinyl pool maintenance, a regular scope of brushing and debris removal is essential. Integrating a robotic vacuum can significantly streamline this process. While the durability of the liner is a key consideration for many clients, it’s important to note that contemporary vinyl liner technology boasts substantial advancements, often backed by 20-year prorated warranties. Our observations indicate that clients typically experience a liner lifespan of 10 to 15 years, with replacement often driven by the desire to revitalize the pool’s appearance with a fresh color palette as opposed to leaks, rips, or other product defects.

Fiberglass Pools

If speed, durability, and low maintenance are at the top of your list, fiberglass may be your perfect match. Installation for fiberglass pools are the quickest out of all the pool options, and depending on the total project, you could be swimming in days, not weeks.

Fiberglass pools are prefabricated pool shells that are manufactured off-site, then delivered to site, typically craned over the house, and dropped into the backyard. Though there are multiple sizes, models, and colours to choose from, clients often feel limited with the customization to truly make it their own.

Thanks to their smooth gelcoat finish, these pools require far less maintenance than concrete or vinyl. There’s no need for resurfacing, no concerns over a liner tearing, or worries of animals (like dogs) scratching the pool walls when they fall in.

Fiberglass Pools

Concrete, also known as gunite or shotcrete, represents the pinnacle of customization and craftsmanship in pool building. If you can dream it, we can build it. Concrete pools allow for complete creative freedom — think vanishing edges, built-in grottos, multi-tiered levels, or unique finishes in stone, tile, or plaster. Concrete pools cost the most due to their labour intensive and custom features, concrete pools are an investment in luxury and personalization.

The trade-off for this customization is a longer installation timeline and a higher level of maintenance. Regular brushing and acid washing every 3–5 years is needed to maintain a clean, attractive surface. Resurfacing is also required approximately every 10 years, and the 10-year maintenance cost will be significantly higher than fiberglass or vinyl.

However, for those seeking a premium, custom-designed pool that makes a bold statement, concrete remains the gold standard.
