CLASSIC ELEGANCE. MODERN APPEAL.
A unique space with a rich connection to the past, exquisitely designed to retain that historic connection and incorporate the elegance of the present. Each element was carefully planned in advance and tailored to the homeowner’s exceptional tastes.
Vision
The owners of this custom-built home in historic Markham, Ontario sought to preserve a railway house that was part of their adjoining property. The railway home would become a rustic focal point of the landscape while the adjoining properties would blend together seamlessly, creating an inviting harmony between property lines.

Rustic elegance greets you at each point in this design. The existing deck has been extended to the pool, enhancing the natural balance of the design. The pool incorporates a shelf/tanning deck that melds with the rock features. A waterfall cascades softly into the spa which is tucked away in an expertly crafted grotto. Additionally, a pergola, boardwalk, and a variety of plants create natural harmony with the railway home resulting in a calming, casual aesthetic that reflect the homeowner’s individual tastes.
CHALLENGES
Partridge worked closely with the homeowners while exploring various design concepts. After many configurations, the most elegant solution to preserving the railway home was to re-purpose it as a pool house. The historic home had to be moved to a new foundation taking care to preserve many original features. In order to maintain two separate properties with a unified design, an open metal picket fence was chosen that enhanced the natural connection between the yards without entirely removing the property line. Finally, in order to enhance the visual balance of the design, the pool deck had to be lowered.
The Result
